I just got an 18 volt black and decker battery weed-eater with 3 batteries.
I have 6 24 volt batteries that came with other various black and decker tools i bought. I would like to know if it is possible to run my weed-eater off of my 24 volt batteries. They have the exact same ends just the 24 volts are taller.

If it even works will it damage either the weed-eater or the batteries?

Answer
it will burn up the motor.

i want to get set of 18 volt cordless power tools, but i am too cheap to buy them all at once. Can i buy them from differnet brands and still expect the batteries to be interchangable?

Answer
if you buy both a drill and a saw that are made by the same manufacturer then usualy the batteries will be interchangable. If they are made by different companies there is virtualy no chance of being able to use the same battery for both.

If you are going to buy them both you will usualy save money buying them together. Manufacturers often sell combo packs with multipul tools that cost considerably less than buying each of the tools seperately.

If you are looking to buy 18v cordless I recomend the Skil brand. I've had a set of the Skil cordless saws and drill for about five years. Among other features the Skil circular saw takes a standard 7 1/4" blade where as most cordless saws only take 5 1/2 - 6 1/2" blades. Not only does this give it a greater cutting capacity but it also means the blades for it are more readily available, available in a much larger variety for different materials, and considerably cheaper than the smaller blades.

Q. I have four Black and Decker 18-Volt Firestorm batteries. I've been charging them on the simple wall charger for about three hours each. They charge but I just think they should last a little longer than they do in my drill, circular saw, flashlight, and weed eater. (all interchangable black and decker 18 volt products) Am I charging them too much or too little?

Answer
If you are using a charger that is intended for the battery, you may leave it on cradle overnight to make sure you are charging it at full capacity.

If you are using a substitute charger, have it charged longer but check if the battery will get hotter than normal. If it won't get hot, have it charged overnight.

Can I convert an 18 volt battery miter saw to an AC piece of equipment and if so how?

Chillo55

I have an 18 volt, 8.25" Ryobi miter saw. I would like to eliminate the battery and be able to run the saw from a continous power source. The batteries wear out to quickly, but the saw is perfect.

Answer
it is possible to do this ...all you would need is a transformer to lower the voltage from 110 volts to 18 volts and a bridge rectifier to change the ac to dc....a bridge rectifier only costs about 30 bucks and a transformer could cost anywhere from 10 to 50 bucks depending on the va of the transformer....to figure the va of the transformer you would multiply the volts 18 times the max amps listed on the data plate of the drill...for example if the drills max amps was 10 amps at 18 volts that would be 180 va(volt amps)....you could mount all of this in a box with a cord to plug into a wall outlet and a cord to go from the drill back to the transformer box....the total cost for something like this plus paying an electrician to wire it all up for you would probably be in the 150 dolllar range....i could build this myself...but it would just be cheaper to buy a standard 110 volt miter saw to begin with.....but on the other hand if you have a lot of 18 volt tools then this could be the way to go as you could adapt the battery itself by removing the battery and using the shell to allow you to change it from one tool to another as long as they all used the same type battery...this would last indefinitely as long as it was built to withstand the max amp load of your most powerful tool ....

how to repair dead power tool batteries?

mel w

I have an 18 volt battery from a milwaukee cordless drill that is dead. Does any one know how to repair them?

Answer
Normally when the rechargeable battery pack won't recharge anymore people just go and buy a whole new battery pack.

If you really want to repair the pack, you could take the battery pack apart then take it to a battery store that specializes in selling just batteries. All the pack consists of is several round (cylindrical) batteries (cells) that are hooked together via wiring. Normally the wiring is welded to the battery ends. If you take the opened up battery pack to the battery store they can replace the battery cells and wire the new ones together like they should be. It may cost less than a new battery pack, but I'm not sure. I replaced the batteries in my rechargeable shaver once when I was tight on money and my shaver gave up the ghost. It cost me $6 to replace the rechargeable batteries compared to $40 for a new rechargeable electric shaver.

can any 18 volt battery be used for 18 volt weed eater?

i have 18 volt battery for my cordless drill, can i use it for a 18 volt cordless weed eater if i buy one?

Answer
If you buy the same brand you can, each brand makes their batteries different so you can't use other manufacturers batteries.

Electrical theory 18vdc is 18vdc, but you could overheat the battery if the amp hour rating of the tool is higher than the design of the battery.

Its like a car batteries, a battery from a Toyota Yaris is 12v, the battery in a Dodge Ram is a 12v, but you put the little 500cca battery in the Ram that needs a 850cca you will overheat the battery and suffer extremely short life.

(Or for a more ridiculous example AAA batteries are 1.5v, stack 8 end to end you get 12v, but you cant start a car that way.)
